Laboratory of Pavement Engineering

This is a historic Laboratory (founded in 1962).

The Laboratory’s scope covers topics related to materials and mixtures, the design, construction, maintenance, strengthening and management of road and airport pavements, as well as specialized topics on railway infrastructure materials.

The Laboratory comprises two Units:

Unit 1: “Laboratory Unit for Testing and Characterization of Materials and Mixtures”

Unit 2: “Unit of Mobile Measurement and Monitoring Systems”.

Laboratory Unit for Testing and Characterization of Materials and Mixtures (laboratory-scale testing of pavement materials and mixtures):

Laboratory determination of fundamental properties and mechanical characteristics of unbound materials, binder materials and pavement mixtures

Advanced tests for mixture compaction, fatigue, resistance to permanent deformation and fracture.

Evaluation of alternative and/or recyclable materials for use in construction, maintenance & reconstruction

Unit of Mobile Measurement & Monitoring Systems (field inspections and testing)

In-situ estimation of the bearing capacity of mixtures and the performance of road and airport pavements using Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) systems at full (1:1) scale

Monitoring of the structural and functional condition of road and airport pavements

Advanced pavement instrumentation systems (e.g. fiber-optic technology)

The activities of the two Units are:

Part of a Quality Management system in accordance with the requirements of the ELOT EN ISO 9001 standard.

Inherently linked to one another through mutual feedback of information aimed at strengthening research into new pavement technologies and materials.

Particular emphasis is given to the following areas:

Adoption of innovative and sustainable materials in the construction and reconstruction of pavements.

Investigation of techniques to enhance the structural behavior of in-service pavements and improve their surface characteristics, with an emphasis on maintaining their skid resistance for the purposes of road safety.

Conducting research related to preparing the transition to smart transportation infrastructure systems (AVs, CVs, CAVs).

Represents Greece, together with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in the international Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL), in the form of the Greek FEHRL Group.
