Establishment details:
Electrical machines were included in the first laboratory, entitled “Electrical Laboratory”, which was established on 14/11/1911 under the Chair of “Electrical Engineering” by Law 3903 and was attached in 1920 to the “Laboratory of Electrical Studies and Research” of NTUA, with Professor G. Sarropoulos as its first Director and G. Raftopoulos as Curator. As the Electrical Machines Laboratory, it was officially established by Royal Decree No. 132/17.2.1962 (Government Gazette A, Issue No. 32, 22-2-1962).

The Electrical Machines & Power Electronics Laboratory (EMPEL) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the oldest and most important laboratories of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). It belongs to the Electric Power Division of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is staffed by 4 faculty members, 2 emeritus professors, one laboratory teaching member, one technical staff, one secretary, and more than 50 non-permanent research staff members (postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, postgraduate and undergraduate students). The Electrical Machines Laboratory was officially established by Royal Decree No. 132/17.2.1962 (Government Gazette A, Issue No. 32, 22-2-1962), while the subject of electrical machines has been supported through laboratory activities since 1911. It is housed in the Old Building of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (main area: 1.2.20, 1st floor). The laboratory website is http://empelab.ece.ntua.gr/index_15.htm.
The Laboratory covers the following fields: electrical machines, power electronics, and all types of applications thereof in the generation, transmission, distribution, storage and final use of electrical energy, such as renewable-energy generation systems and electrical energy storage systems, electric motor drive systems, FACTS devices and high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission technologies.
In addition to supporting the educational activities of the School, the Laboratory conducts basic and applied research through diploma and postgraduate theses, doctoral dissertations and research projects, and provides specialized services to public and private entities. The research activity of the Laboratory is categorized as follows:
- Research on electrical machines and their applications in electric-drive systems.
- Research on applications of power electronics and industrial electronics.
- Research on low-frequency electromagnetic fields.
- Research on renewable energy sources and distributed power generation.
The Laboratory collaborates with major Greek organizations active in the above fields, such as:
- the Public Power Corporation (PPC)
- the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE)
- electric-transport public organizations
- the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES).
Furthermore, it participates in the analysis and design of various types of electrical machines and power-electronics equipment for private Greek companies.
At the international level, the Laboratory participates in major organizations in its field (IEEE, IEE, CIGRE, etc.), in European Union research projects, and has developed numerous inter-university collaborations through European programs, including FP7 and HORIZON programs.
The Laboratory is equipped with the following state-of-the-art equipment:
- AC and DC electrical machines.
- AC and DC electric-drive systems.
- Power-electronics converters (power supplies, AC-DC and DC-AC converters).
- Electrical-machine performance measurement and regenerative braking systems up to 150 kW.
- Power-quality measurement systems.
- Four prototype electric vehicles.
- Four-quadrant DC motor drive system.
- Induction-motor drive systems using microprocessor technology.
- DSpace processor with FPGA ports.
- Generalized 100 kW power supply with switching frequencies up to 50 kHz.
- Variable three-phase 45 kVA controlled-waveform supply.
- Variable three-phase 10 kVA electronic loads.
- Controllable high-temperature motor test chamber.
- Various software packages (PSPICE, SIMULINK, MATLAB, FEMM) for educational and research use.
In addition, the Laboratory offers testing services for:
- electrical machines
- power-electronics equipment
- electric-drive systems
as well as the issuance of test certificates.
