The Biomedical Engineering Laboratory (BEL) of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) was created in 1990 and since 2001 it has been an institutionalized laboratory of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Government Gazette, No. 66, Apr 6, 2001). The mission of the Laboratory is to serve educational and research needs in the fields of Biomedical Technology and applications related to the relevant technologies. On the educational level, its members participate in the provision of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level both within the ECE and in collaboration with other Universities, developing both greek and foreign language educational material. Under the supervision of the Laboratory, more than 400 theses and 65 doctoral dissertations have been completed, while more than 600 papers have been published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences. In addition, the Laboratory has many years of experience in the preparation, coordination and implementation of more than 200 research and development projects of greek and european funding in collaboration with international academic, research, business and other institutions, assuming a coordinating role in about 50 of them. These projects are directly related to the general activities of the Laboratory, which cover areas of basic and applied research in specialized areas of Biomedical Technology and multimodal data management, leading to the development of products & services for end-use, covering among others the following fields:
- Development of Medical Data Management Systems
- Development of Integrated Hardware & Software Systems for Biomedical Applications
- Big Data Technologies
- Telematics applications in the field of Healthcare
- e-Health & Mobile Health Applications (m-Health)
- Artificial Intelligence methods using advanced techniques such as Neural Networks
- Data Security
- Biometric Technologies, installation of Biosensors, data acquisition and analysis
- Digital Processing of Medical Image & other Biosignals for Prognostic, Diagnostic & Therapeutic purposes in the context of Clinical Decision Support
- Robotics applications for support & rehabilitation
- Virtual & Augmented Reality in Healthcare
- Biorheology, Clinical Haemorheology
- Models for Analysis and Simulation of Biological and Non-Biological Systems with applications in Radiation-Tissue Interaction, Treatment Response, Planning of Surgical Interventions, Analysis of Tumor Properties, Study of Musculoskeletal Functions & Neurophysiological Processes under Pathological Conditions
- Standardisation & Regulatory Frameworks on data capture, management & representation and organisation of health structures
In the context of its activities, the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory has organized more than 60 national and international conferences and workshops, having undertaken, among others, the scientific coordination of the E-Health Forum 2014 in the framework of the Greek Presidency of the European Union as well as the presidency of the Hellenic Society of Biotechnology (ELEVIT) and HL7 Hellas.
As a result, the Laboratory has developed an extensive network of close collaboration with greek and international university laboratories, companies and health care stakeholders, while acquiring a significant technological infrastructure that allows the use of advanced & computationally demanding methods. The above-mentioned work of the Laboratory is carried out under the auspices of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Research University Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (ICCS-NTUA).
